Ultrasounds during pregnancy are performed by obstetricians, nurse midwives, or ultrasound technicians (sonographers) for several reasons. Ultrasounds may be performed at various stages of pregnancy to assess fetal growth, development, and overall well-being.

An ultrasound uses a transducer to send sound waves into your abdomen or vagina. Sound waves can bounce off inside tissues, including your baby and reproductive organs. The sound waves are then converted into visuals, which your provider may view on a screen. Ultrasound imaging does not use ionizing radiation, such as X-rays, making it a preferred imaging method during pregnancy.

Prenatal ultrasounds are considered safe when performed for medical reasons and by trained healthcare professionals.

At Mylurah we’re building a digital platform that centers Black women’s reproductive journeys, including culturally sensitive support for Period, Pregnancy and Postpartum. The mid-trimester anatomy scan is typically performed between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy.

During this detailed examination, healthcare providers assess the baby’s physical development, checking the formation of vital organs including the heart, brain, spine, and kidneys.

They measure the baby’s head, abdomen, and limbs to ensure growth is progressing normally. Any deviations from expected development patterns can be identified, allowing medical teams to prepare appropriate interventions or treatments.

Identifying Structural Abnormalities

One of the most important functions of pregnancy scans is detecting structural abnormalities or birth defects. Conditions such as heart defects, neural tube defects like spina bifida, cleft lip and palate, and kidney problems can often be visualized through ultrasound imaging.

Early identification of these conditions allows parents time to process the information, consult with specialists, and make informed decisions about their pregnancy.

It also enables healthcare teams to plan for specialized care during delivery and immediately after birth, potentially improving outcomes for babies with complex medical needs.

Assessing Placental Health and Position

The placenta, often called the life-support system of pregnancy, is thoroughly evaluated during scans.

Healthcare providers check the placenta’s position to identify conditions like placenta previa, where the placenta covers the cervix and may require a cesarean delivery.

They also assess placental function and blood flow to ensure the baby is receiving adequate nutrients and oxygen. The amount of amniotic fluid is measured as well, since too much or too little can indicate underlying problems that need attention.

Monitoring High-Risk Pregnancies

For women with high-risk pregnancies—whether due to maternal age, pre-existing medical conditions, previous pregnancy complications, or concerns detected in earlier scans—additional ultrasounds provide essential monitoring.

These scans can track conditions like intrauterine growth restriction, where the baby isn’t growing as expected, or monitor twins and multiples for complications specific to multiple pregnancies.

In high-risk pregnancies, more frequent ultrasound monitoring can help detect complications early and guide timely medical intervention.

By joining MyLurah community group, you can take advantage of the platform and improve your chances of meeting people of like mind who are ready to listen to you and offer solutions anytime.

Emotional and Psychological Benefits

Beyond the medical advantages, pregnancy scans offer significant emotional benefits. For many parents, seeing their baby’s image on the screen and hearing the heartbeat creates a profound sense of connection and makes the pregnancy feel more real.

This bonding experience can be especially meaningful for partners who aren’t physically experiencing the pregnancy. Scans also provide reassurance during what can be an anxious time, helping to alleviate fears and concerns about the baby’s wellbeing.

Wrap up

Pregnancy scans have become an indispensable component of prenatal care, offering a unique combination of medical necessity and emotional reassurance. These safe, non-invasive procedures provide critical information about fetal development, identify potential complications early, and allow healthcare providers to deliver personalized, proactive care.

From confirming a healthy pregnancy in its earliest stages to detecting abnormalities that require specialized attention, ultrasound technology has dramatically improved outcomes for mothers and babies alike. Beyond the clinical benefits, scans create meaningful moments of connection between parents and their unborn children, marking milestones in the pregnancy journey.

As medical technology continues to advance, ultrasound imaging is expected to remain an essential component of evidence-based prenatal care. For expectant parents, embracing these opportunities for monitoring and connection is an important investment in the health and future of their growing family.

Pregnancy is a transformative period often filled with anticipation, joy, and natural concerns about the health and well-being of both…

[47
44
post-887","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pregnancy","tag-mylurah-pregnancy
["GET
