Intake of these substances provides organisms with nutrients (macro- and micro-) that can be digested to create energy and chemical structures.

Malnutrition refers to deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances in a person’s intake of energy and/or nutrients. Nutritional science is an evidence-based discipline that studies how nutrients and dietary patterns affect human health.

Malnutrition, in any form, poses a severe threat to human health. Today, the globe is facing a twin burden of malnutrition, including both undernutrition and obesity, particularly in low- and middle-income nations.

Malnutrition can take several forms, like as undernutrition (wasting or stunting), a lack of vitamins or minerals, becoming overweight or obese, and developing diet-related noncommunicable diseases.

The global burden of malnutrition has substantial and long-term consequences for individuals and their families, communities, and governments.

What is Nutrition?

Nutrition is the process of consuming and utilizing the appropriate amounts and combinations of nutrients to keep the body functioning properly.

Good eating can help lower your risk of disease. It can help you heal and maintain your mental wellness.

Adequate nutrition in childhood is associated with improved cognitive development, learning capacity, and school performance.

At Mylurah we’re building a digital platform that centers Black women’s reproductive journeys, including culturally sensitive support for Period, Pregnancy and Postpartum. Because representation in care isn’t optional, it’s essential.

What is Nutrients?

There are six primary categories of nutrients. Eating correctly is a balanced effort including all six. Nutrients from diet provide many benefits to the body.

Macronutrients offer energy and help your body function. Micronutrients include vitamins and minerals. They boost your metabolism, among other things. Water completes the list of basic nutrients. It aids nutrition in a variety of ways, including delivering nutrients and oxygen to your cells.

Macronutrients

If your body was a building, macronutrients would be the foundation. Macronutrients are your main source of energy. Macronutrients are:

Carbohydrates like sugars, starches and fiber, which are the main source of energy powering your body

Lipids —Lipids (fats) store energy, support cell structure, aid in hormone production, and help absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).

Proteins, which help to build and repair muscle, as well as regulate hormones

Micronutrients

Micronutrients include essential vitamins and minerals. You need fewer micronutrients than macronutrients, but they’re still very important.

Vitamins are organic compounds required in small amounts for normal metabolism and must generally be obtained from the diet. Many people take a multivitamin to make sure they’re getting all the vitamins they need. You may recognize some vitamin names, like vitamin A, vitamin C or vitamin D. Others may not be so familiar. But they all contribute to your health. The following are essential vitamins:

Vitamin A supports your immune system, metabolism and vision.

Vitamins B vitamins act as coenzymes in energy metabolism, helping the body convert carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into usable energy.

Vitamin C supports your body in many ways. It helps your body grow tissue. It can also heal wounds and strengthen your immune system.

Vitamin D partners with calcium to build and maintain healthy bones. Vitamin D also supports brain health and your immune system.

Vitamin E helps to protect your cells. It also helps to maintain the health of your red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. This vitamin also supports your brain, eyes and skin.

Vitamin K helps your blood to clot and prevents excessive bleeding.

Minerals make their way into food via the animals that eat them and the plants that absorb them. Animals and plants provide minerals. These substances support your health in many ways. The following minerals are micronutrients:

Calcium builds strong bones. It also supports your heart, muscles and nervous system.

Chromium helps your body metabolize (process) carbohydrates and fats.

Copper supports brain development, your immune system and your nervous system.

Fluoride helps to keep your bones strong and to prevent tooth decay.

Iodine promotes brain development, thyroid health and more.

Iron helps your body make hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells.

Magnesium makes new proteins and helps to convert food into energy.

Manganese protects your cells from damage and helps your body make energy.

Phosphorus builds and maintains strong bones and teeth, produces energy and repairs cells.

Potassium Adequate potassium intake is associated with lower blood pressure and reduced risk of stroke.

Selenium supports thyroid health and reproductive health.

Sodium Sodium helps regulate fluid balance, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction, but excessive intake is linked to high blood pressure.

Zinc boosts your immune system and protects your vision.

By joining MyLurah community group, you can take advantage of the platform and improve your chances of meeting people of like mind who are ready to listen to you and offer solutions anytime.

WRAP UP

Proper nutrition is foundational for overall health, reducing the risk of illness and supporting vitality throughout life.

Nutrition stands as one of the fundamental pillars of human health and well-being. What we choose to eat each day shapes not only our physical vitality but also our mental clarity, emotional balance, and long-term disease risk.

While the science of nutrition can seem complex and ever-evolving, the core principles remain remarkably consistent: a diet rich in whole foods, abundant in fruits and vegetables, balanced in macronutrients, and moderate in portion size forms the foundation of good health. Yet nutrition extends beyond mere biochemistry.

Our relationship with food is deeply personal, influenced by culture, economics, accessibility, and individual circumstances. There is no single perfect diet that works for everyone, which is why sustainable nutritional choices must be both evidence-based and adaptable to individual needs and lifestyles.

As we continue to uncover the intricate connections between diet and health, one truth becomes increasingly clear: investing in good nutrition is investing in our future selves, offering returns in energy, longevity, and quality of life that far exceed the effort required to make thoughtful food choices each day.

Nutrition refers to how an organism uses food and water to sustain itself.
