Teenage pregnancy is a global issues with clearly known causes and serious health, social and economic consequences. However, child marriage and child sexual abuse place girls at increased risk of pregnancy, often unintended.

What is Teenage Pregnancy?

Teenage Pregnancy, a case of an underage girl, usually within the ages of thirteen to nineteen years, becoming pregnant, is a serious cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabric of our societies in this contemporary period. The term in everyday speech usually refers to women who have not reached legal adulthood to become pregnant.

This focuses on the prevalence of this act among the teenagers in Nigeria, it shows the general causes, effects, and way out of this social menace in our societies. Some of the root causes are poverty, peer pressure, and media influence, while the effects include school dropout, inadequate care for the child born by a teenage mother, health problems, and a host of other vices.

Teenage pregnancy, also known as adolescent pregnancy, is when a woman under the age of 20 becomes pregnant. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines adolescence as the period between the ages of 10 and 19.

Pregnancy can occur once ovulation begins, which may happen shortly before a girls first menstrual period.

At Mylurah we’re building a digital platform that centers Black women’s reproductive journeys, including culturally sensitive support for Period, Pregnancy and Postpartum. Because representation in care isn’t optional, it’s essential.

What are the Causes of Teenage Pregnancy?

Lack of Knowledge and Ability to Track Menstrual Cycle: A lack of understanding of the menstrual cycle and how to track it can lead to misconceptions about fertile periods.

Poverty and Socioeconomic Status: Teenagers from low-income households and disadvantaged communities are more likely to become pregnant. Poverty can drive girls to engage in transactional sex (exchanging sex for money, food, or gifts) to meet their basic needs. In some cases, a child support grant is even perceived as a potential source of income for the family.

Lack of Education: A low level of education or dropping out of school significantly increases the risk of teenage pregnancy. Girls with minimal education are less likely to have information about sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Limited Access to Contraception: Inadequate access to and information about contraception are major contributing factors. Teenagers may be too embarrassed or afraid to seek out birth control methods due to social stigma, or face cultural barriers and misconceptions (such as the belief that contraception causes infertility).

Cultural and Social Norms: Traditional practices such as early or forced marriage often lead to adolescent pregnancy, especially in rural areas. Cultural taboos surrounding discussions about sex and sexuality limit open communication between parents, teachers, and teenagers, resulting in a lack of accurate knowledge.

Peer Pressure and Media Influence: The influence of friends and exposure to sexual content in the media can encourage early sexual activity. Peer pressure can lead teenagers to engage in risky behaviors, including unprotected sex, to fit in or because they believe their peers support such behavior.

Family Dynamics: Dysfunctional family environments, lack of parental guidance, poor parent-child communication, and a history of domestic violence or abuse increase the vulnerability of teenagers to early pregnancy. Girls whose fathers are absent during childhood are also at a higher risk.

Substance Abuse: Alcohol and drug use can lower inhibitions and impair judgment, leading to unplanned and unprotected sexual encounters.

Sexual Violence: A notable percentage of teenage pregnancies result from sexual abuse or rape, where the teenager is coerced into sexual activity.

By joining MyLurah community group, you can take advantage of the platform and improve your chances of meeting people of like mind who are ready to listen to you and offer solutions anytime.

Few Steps to Reduce Teenage Pregnancy?

Reducing teenage pregnancy requires a multifaceted approach involving individual, family, community, and health system steps.

For Teenagers

Dual Protection: Use condoms in addition to another form of birth control to prevent both pregnancy and STIs..

Abstinence: Abstinence is the only method that completely prevents pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections; however, for sexually active teenagers, consistent and correct use of condoms and other effective contraceptive methods greatly reduces risk..

Use Effective Contraception: For those who are sexually active, consistent and correct use of effective contraception—such as condoms, pills, patches, or, when appropriate and prescribed by a healthcare provider, long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs)—significantly reduces the risk of pregnancy.

Seek Accurate Information: Access accurate, age-appropriate information about sexual health and reproduction from reliable sources like schools, healthcare providers, and parents.

Build Future Aspirations: Engage in school, extracurricular activities, and career planning to build self-esteem and future goals that may serve as a deterrent to early pregnancy.

For Parents and Families

Open Communication: Talk with your children early and often about sex, relationships, and your family’s values and expectations.

Be “Askable”: Create a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental environment where teenagers feel comfortable asking questions and discussing their concerns.

Encourage Healthcare Visits: Ensure your child has regular health provider visits where they can confidentially discuss sexual and reproductive health issues with a medical professional.

Set Expectations: Establish clear rules and expectations regarding dating and sexual behavior, and be aware of your children’s friends and media consumption.

For Communities and Healthcare Providers

Provide Comprehensive Education: Schools and community programs should implement comprehensive sex education that covers human sexuality, contraception options, healthy relationships, and skill-building (e.g., communication, decision-making, refusal skills).

Expand Access to Services: Ensure teenagers have easy, confidential, and affordable access to sexual and reproductive health services and a wide range of contraceptive methods, potentially through school-based clinics or youth-friendly health centers.

Address Socioeconomic Factors: Implement programs that address underlying issues like poverty, lack of educational opportunities, and family dysfunction, as these are strong drivers of teenage pregnancy.

Promote Positive Youth Development: Offer mentorship, job training, and civic engagement opportunities to help adolescents develop skills, build self-reliance, and pursue meaningful educational and employment goals.

WRAP UP

Addressing teenage pregnancy requires collective effort from families, schools, communities, governments, and healthcare providers. The consequences are far-reaching, including interrupted education, health risks for both mother and child, emotional stress, and reduced economic opportunities.

Comprehensive sex education, open communication between parents and teenagers, access to youth-friendly health services, and empowerment programs for young people are essential steps toward reducing its prevalence.

When teenagers are equipped with accurate information, supportive environments, and opportunities for personal development, they are better positioned to make informed decisions about their futures.

Ultimately, tackling the issues surrounding teenage pregnancy is not just about prevention but about creating a society where young people can grow, thrive, and achieve their full potential without being forced into adulthood responsibilities too soon.

Recognizing these struggles and talking about them openly helps remove shame and encourages healing. Every teenager deserves understanding, support, and access to proper Health Care Provider.

Issues surrounding teenage pregnancy are sometimes driven by poverty, lack of sex ed, and cultural factors, leading to poor health (maternal…

[47
44,54
post-849","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pregnancy","tag-mylurah-pregnancy","tag-teenage-pregnancy
["GET
