You sit down next to her and ask what’s wrong. She says she doesn’t know. You immediately start listing what might help: a lactation consultant, a night nurse, or maybe talking to her doctor about her sleep. She nods and says, “Yeah, maybe,” and the conversation ends there. Neither of you feels closer. You feel dismissed for trying. She feels unheard for being offered logistics instead of the company.

What Is This Really About?

At its core, this is about the difference between helping and fixing. Fixing treats her feelings like a problem to be resolved efficiently. Helping treats her feelings like something worth staying present with, even when there’s no clean solution. For many partners, especially those wired to problem-solve under stress, sitting in discomfort without offering a fix feels almost unbearable. But that discomfort is exactly the space she needs someone to hold.

How to Support Her

This isn’t just relationship advice; it’s a pattern researchers have studied closely in the postpartum period, when women are most emotionally vulnerable and most in need of steady partnership.

Across the perinatal period, partner support consistently emerges as one of the strongest protective factors against depression and anxiety in new mothers [1]. But the type of support matters. Expert consensus research involving both clinicians and patient advocates found that emotional closeness and genuine communication, not task completion alone, are what are most strongly linked to lower rates of perinatal depression and anxiety [2].

This helps explain why “fixing” so often falls flat. One longitudinal study found that when partners provided lower levels of emotional support, women were more likely to experience postpartum depression symptoms that didn’t resolve on their own [3] — even in households where the logistical load was being handled. The emotional gap, not the practical one, was what persisted.

And the upside is just as clear. Research shows that emotional and practical support during the postpartum period increases a mother’s confidence in caring for her baby [4], meaning presence itself builds her capability, not just her comfort.

Instead Do: Presence Before Problem Solving

The most emotionally intelligent thing you can do in that moment on the edge of the bed isn’t to generate options. It’s to sit down, put the phone away, and ask one honest question: “Do you want me to help solve this, or do you just want me to be here with you right now?”

That single question does something a to-do list can’t, it hands her the control back. It tells her that her experience doesn’t need to be resolved to be worth your attention.

From there, the skill is simple but not easy. Reflect before you redirect. Say what you noticed: “You seem really depleted tonight” before you say what you’d do about it. Let silence sit for a beat longer than feels comfortable.

If she wants solutions, she’ll ask. Most of the time, she’s testing something quieter: can he stay close to me when things are hard, without needing to make them easy?

At MyLurah, we believe every woman deserves to feel informed, supported, and understood throughout every stage of her reproductive journey. It’s the harder, more advanced one, and it’s the kind the research keeps pointing back to as what actually protects her and your relationship through the hardest stretch of early parenthood.

References

The Important Role of Partner Support in Women’s Mental Disorders During the Perinatal Period.
