The moment passes. But the ache stays for the rest of the day, quiet and uninvited, tucked underneath everything else you do.

You didn’t do anything wrong by leaving. You just left something real behind and it still knows how to find you.

What Is This Really About?

This is about the particular grief of building a life you’re proud of while still missing the one you left. Homesickness isn’t a sign that you made the wrong choice. It’s evidence that home mattered and that missing it and moving forward aren’t opposites. They can happen in the same body, on the same day.

What Missing Home Actually Shows

Homesickness isn’t just sentimentality, it’s a documented psychological experience with real, measurable effects, and real, evidence based ways through it.

Research on migrant workers and expatriates has found substantial evidence that homesickness functions as a genuine psychological and social strain, not simply a passing mood [1]. Studies among people living far from home have found a significant positive association between homesickness and depressive symptoms [2] meaning the ache is worth taking seriously, not minimizing.

But the research also offers real hope. A multi-year study following young immigrants found something important about the shape of this experience over time: acculturative stress and homesickness were shown to shift across the first three years in a new country, intensifying in the second year before easing in the third [3] a pattern many people who’ve relocated recognize instinctively but rarely see confirmed.

The hardest stretch isn’t the beginning. It’s the middle, once the novelty fades and reality settles in and it does tend to ease from there.

What helps most is well documented, too. The same study found that personal psychological resources and social support significantly buffered both acculturative stress and homesickness [3], while perceived discrimination made both worse [3]. Real, ongoing connection, isn’t a nice extra. It’s protective.

Instead Do: Let Both Things Be True at Once

You don’t have to choose between honoring what you left and building what’s ahead. Give the longing a place to exist instead of pushing it down, a weekly call home, a dish you cook the way your grandmother did, a photo on the wall that’s just for you. Suppressing homesickness doesn’t make it smaller. It just makes it show up sideways, in irritability or exhaustion you can’t explain.

At the same time, invest deliberately in your new life’s texture not just logistics, but real belonging. One recurring local connection. One place that starts to feel familiar. Research consistently points to social support as the strongest buffer available to you, so treat building it as essential, not optional.

At MyLurah, we believe every woman deserves to feel informed, supported, and understood throughout every stage of her reproductive journey. It’s a sign you’re right on schedule. This is a sensitive topic, and if homesickness is affecting your daily functioning or mood in a lasting way, it’s worth talking to a mental health professional who understands the immigrant or expatriate experience specifically.

References

When Home Isn’t Home – A Study of Homesickness and Coping Strategies among Migrant Workers and Expatriates. ResearchGate. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/272804990_When_Home_Isn’t_Home_-_A_Study_of_Homesickness_and_Coping_Strategies_among_Migrant_Workers_and_Expatriates

Understanding Homesickness: Its Relationship With Psychopathology And Psychological Wellbeing Among International Students. Journal for ReAttach Therapy and Developmental Diversities. https://jrtdd.com/index.php/journal/article/view/2769

A longitudinal study of acculturative stress and homesickness: high-school adolescents immigrating from Russia and Ukraine to Israel without parents (2007). Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17502976/

It’s an ordinary Sunday afternoon, and you’re standing in your new kitchen in a country you chose, in a life…

[68
74,73
post-1512","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-culture-and-experience","tag-culture-and-experience","tag-mylurah
["GET
