You check your phone, sigh, and start figuring out the logistics again. Not because your partner can’t handle it, but because somewhere along the way, you became “in charge” of the mental load, and they became the one who “helps out.” Neither of you decided this out loud. It just settled in, the way sediment does, until asking for help started to feel like managing an employee instead of leaning on a partner.

That quiet imbalance is exhausting in a way that’s hard to name because on paper, you’re a team. In practice, you’re the manager.

What Is This Really About?

This is about the difference between coparenting as a hierarchy, one parent directing, the other assisting, and coparenting as a genuine team, where both people carry ownership, not just tasks. Hierarchies create silent resentment. Teams create shared investment. The distinction isn’t about who does more chores. It’s about who feels responsible.

Co-parenting Actually Shows

This isn’t just a modern parenting preference, it’s a pattern with measurable effects on families.

Research shows the quality of the coparenting relationship affects both parents’ wellbeing and children’s development, independent of family structure, beyond even the effect of the parent child relationship itself [1]. Coparenting quality, in other words, isn’t a side detail, it’s a core driver of how the whole family functions.

The “hierarchy vs. team” distinction shows up directly in the data. A study found that coparenting undermining was associated with poorer parental wellbeing and lower parenting efficiency, while coparenting support was associated with better wellbeing and effectiveness for both parents [2] and notably, research found no gender differences in how coparenting quality affected parental adjustment, meaning shared, supportive coparenting matters equally for mothers and fathers [2].

The move toward true partnership also has ripple effects on the relationship itself. Research on fathers during increased at-home caregiving found that more equitable, shared parenting arrangements were linked to greater father competence, higher coparenting relationship quality, and greater marital satisfaction [3]. Meanwhile, research has found that women who hold more egalitarian views about shared parenting report the greatest dissatisfaction when their partner participates less than expected [4] a reminder that the expectation of partnership, not just the division of labor, shapes how supported each parent feels.

Instead Do: Trade the Org Chart for a Shared Mission

Real coparenting partnership starts with naming the invisible roles out loud. Sit down outside of a crisis moment and ask honestly: what am I carrying that you don’t even see? Not to assign blame, but to make the mental load visible enough to redistribute.

From there, shift the language. Replace “can you help me with the kids” with “what’s your plan for the kids this week” a small phrase that moves your partner from assistant to co-owner. Rotate who holds the default responsibility for recurring tasks appointments, school communication, planning instead of one person always defaulting to “in charge.”

At MyLurah, we believe every woman deserves to feel informed, supported, and understood throughout every stage of her reproductive journey. From navigating periods and understanding her body to preparing for pregnancy and adjusting to life after birth, we create a safe space for culturally informed education, meaningful conversations, and community support.

And when your partner does something differently than you would, resist the instinct to correct it. A team has room for two competent approaches. A hierarchy only has room for one.

Partnership isn’t a 50/50 spreadsheet. It’s the shared sense that you’re both fully responsible for the same family, not one parent leading, and the other just along for the ride.

References

Promoting Positive Coparenting: Toward Comprehensive and Inclusive Family Policies. National Council on Family Relations. https://www.ncfr.org/policy/research-and-policy-briefs/promoting-positive-coparenting-toward-comprehensive-and-inclusive-family-policies

Associations between Coparenting Quality and Food Parenting Practices among Mothers and Fathers in the Guelph Family Health Study. PMC. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7996735/

Molloy, C.
